Some videos of my Aikido training have went viral over the years.
The reason for this has mainly been stoked by negative comments about Aikido.
People seem to line up to talk badly about Aikido and can’t help but want to comment.
It’s as if they have created a whole story in their head about what is going on and have turned me into a villain that they have to stop with their comments.
Their comments fuel the videos going viral ironically.
Along the way I have had numerous people tell me they were going to come along to my class to challenge me.
Many have private messaged me looking to set up a challenge or asking if they can come to the class.
No one has actually ever shown up and I doubt they will. If they did, I think they would just join along with the class and forget about whatever bothered them enough to come along.
I’m not interested in testing Aikido against another art as for me it makes no sense. I don’t expect to be able to beat a wrestler at wrestling or a boxer at boxing or a BJJ specialist at grappling. I don’t expect to beat a Tai Chi practitioner at push hands either or be better at a different style of Aikido than people that have trained a different way for years.
Why should I? Would a darts player beat a snooker player? Or a chess player beat a scrabble player? It makes no sense.
In the history of Aikido, there are accounts and stories of teachers taking on all comers and defeating them. With an elite level of skill, I think this may be possible. I’m not particularly curious to see how that would work for me.
I’m open to learning new things and being invited along to classes. I’m not looking to enter into the ring to prove myself and there is a whole list of reasons I have yet to want to go down the combat sports route. Perhaps I will share that later.
